Extra training infield behind the outfield fence.

  • Offers a place where youth from the neighborhood and Burley Middle School could hang out in a safe environment with resources.
  • Offers history of the Rose Hill and surrounding neighborhoods that is often neglected in the public schools.
  • Models RBI Harlem; the Washington Nationals Youth Training Academy; Long Ball Durham (NC) etc.
  • Perhaps tied in to UVA, or the Boys & Girls Club or some other entity that could offer programming. Or, would an organization need to be created?

We would like to build a Walk of Fame at the Burley facility that honors past black athletes from the Central Virginia area with exhibits that tell the stores of a segregated Burley High School and the Rose Hill Neighborhood. Jimmy Hollins and the Burley Varsity Club and the club love this idea. This is a walk along the upper concourse of Smith-Jones Field and continues through to Booker T. Washington Park connecting county to city to UVA. We are utilizing current Burley students in planning the ACPS side of the Walk. Recently, we got approval to utilize Buford Middle School students to plan the City/Washington Park side of the Walk. UVA professors Elgin Cleckley & Barbara Brown Wilson are on-board as is Executive Director of the UVA Equity City Ben Allen. They will TEACH planning & design to our youth as they plan this wonderful memorial.

H3 has been in touch with young artist Sahara Clemons (H3 lead is Lori Shinseki) with the CMP about painting a mural that depicts the rich history of this historic property. We have discussed painting it on the back of the dugout and the side of the current school, but the current thinking is to build it into the design of the retaining wall/Walk of Fame that overlooks the field.

  • Community Garden that will welcome the Rose Hill neighborhood.

“We want to see this field refurbished, and we are leaving no stone unturned,” Jimmy Hollins (President of the Burley Varsity Club) said.  “We are asking everybody to pitch in and help. … Burley is a part, and always will be a part, of the city black community and the Albemarle County black community.”
